George Talmadge Smith

October 15, 1961 — August 11, 2025

Charlotte, NC

George Talmadge “Gus” Smith, 63, died Monday, August 11, 2025, at Atrium Health Main in Charlotte, NC. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 17, 2025, at Greenlawn Cemetery with Rev. Chase Catledge officiating. The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

Born September 15, 1961 to adoptive parents M.H. Smith, Sr. and Dorothy Jean Baker Smith, he was a graduate of the schools of Greenville, SC. George was retired as a supervisor with Bovis Construction.

George is survived by his companion of over 25 years, Dawn Farree Thomas; one brother, Melvin H. "Teddy" Smith, Jr. (Janice) of Great Falls; two nephews, Beau Smith and Will Smith both of Great Falls; and several cousins.

George was a motorcycle enthusiast who enjoyed riding to the beach, mountains or wherever the open road took him at that moment. He had a unique sense of adventure and a deep abiding love of his Lord and life.

His passing has left an empty space in the hearts of his family, friends and so many more whose lives were touched by him. He should be remembered not for the way he died but rather the way he lived ... a free spirit. He never shirked when faced with difficult situations. One of his favorite sayings was "Adapt and Overcome" which he did in many situations given his handicap. This attitude earned him deep respect in his community and those who knew and loved him.

Memorials may be made to DAV, James A. Wessinger Chapter, 623 Baseball Alley, Chester, SC 29706.
