Jo Anne Nichols, a native of Great Falls, South Carolina, and a longtime resident of
Columbia, South Carolina, died peacefully in the early morning hours of February 2, 2025. At the
time of her death, she was a resident of Carolina Village, a retirement community in
Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Ms. Nichols was the daughter of the late James Heath Nichols and Leila Lewis Nichols.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Nichols was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Heath
Nichols of Atlanta and her sister, Patricia Nichols Dalbec of Hendersonville. She is survived by
her sister Martha Nichols Lowry of Hendersonville, her sister-in-law, Barbara Dasher Nichols of
Atlanta, and brothers-in-law, Keith Dalbec and James Lowry both of Hendersonville.
Additionally, she is survived by many nieces and nephews for whom she was a much beloved
aunt famous for her love of cats, books, and summer vacations at the beach.
Ms. Nichols was a 1954 graduate of Great Falls High School and a 1958 graduate of
Columbia College. Immediately upon gradation from college she began teaching Social Studies
at Crayton Middle School in Columbia where she continued her career until she reached
retirement age. By all accounts, Ms. Nichols was extremely popular among her students and was
held in highest regard by her colleagues on the faculty and staff of Crayton Middle School.
Ms. Nichols was a lifelong member of Mount Dearborn United Methodist Church in
Great Falls. As an expression of her faith commitment, for many years she served as the primary
care giver for her mother. Members of her family are deeply grateful for that service.
Ms. Nichols’ family is particularly grateful to Bea Whitener, her thoughtful and wise
companion and care giver, and to the staff of the Carolina Village Care Center for the
professional and personal attention they gave to her during her final illness.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P M, Saturday, March 1, 2025, in the Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery, 14246 SC Hwy. 200, Great Falls, SC. Ms. Nichols’ brother-in-law, Rev. James S. Lowry will officiate.
